Host an Exchange Student coming to Johnstown!

August 20, 2009 — Everyone across the world dreams of exotic travel destinations, and for many International Students that destination is the USA!

At Forte International Exchange Association (FIEA), a non-profit student exchange association based in Washington, DC, the goal is to foster understanding and cooperation between United States and other countries worldwide through international academic exchange programs at the high school level.

Starting in the fall of 2009, Bishop McCort School will be host to three bright Chinese students, who will study in the 10th and 11th grades for the year. They are very excited to experience America and all that Pennsylvania has to offer, but they first need host families to make this dream a reality. We are currently looking for host families in the Johnstown area who would like to experience a new culture and open up their homes to these students. The host family simply has to provide a loving environment as well as room, board and transportation to and from school. In return, the family will receive a $500 per month stipend and a new global perspective!

The Johnstown Chiefs, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets, and the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters and Syracuse Crunch are holding a hockey camp this week for area youth hockey players at Planet Ice Arena in Johnstown.

Planet Ice in Johnstown is host to a youth skills development hockey camp for kids aged six to 16. The Chiefs have teamed up with Planet Ice staff to help conduct the on ice practices all this week, July 27 – 31. Planet Ice is pleased to have the partnership of the Chiefs as well as the experience they can lend the young hockey players from their professional experience.

“We are having a very successful camp this year. The parents are happy and the kids are having a great time and are taking full advantage of learning the game through the Chiefs. All the Chiefs players and personnel have been a tremendous help to make this camp not only successful, but possible”, said Camp Director, Scott Wertz.

The Chiefs players have been running the on ice practices for the camp, which run six, one hour sessions a day. They have been working with the kids on most facets of the game and pushing the young players to become more skilled and all around improved hockey players. Notable Chiefs players such as Randy Rowe and Jason Spence have been working with the skaters, while goaltender, Kris Mayotte was working with the young goalies who are participating with the camp. The Chiefs players are pleased to help out with the camp and strengthen hockey in the area as well as for the younger generation.

“It’s a lot of fun. They (the kids) come to all our games and try to support us as much as they can. It is the least that we can do to come down and take a week out of our summer time and come out here and play with them and try to teach them a few things. Most people that watch our games are involved in hockey and anytime we can give back to the community and show that we want to be here and we want to help out, because you never know, they could be the next people playing for the Chiefs down the road”, said Johnstown Chiefs captain, Randy Rowe.

The reater Johnstown/Cambria County Chamber of Commerce and the Home Builders Association of the Alleghenies (HBAA) have partnered to produce the 2009 Home Show, scheduled for October 30, October 31 and November 1, 2009, at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center in downtown Johnstown.

The 2009 Home Show committee has added several new components to the show. Most significantly, the Home Show has been moved from spring to fall to avoid competition with other area home shows.  This change in scheduling not only enables vendors to participate in multiple shows, but will give consumers a better opportunity to review options and schedule a project with a contractor. 

Also new to the show this year is an invitation-only VIP Reception on Friday, October 30 for vendors, their guests, and members of the business community.  This event will provide an exclusive opportunity for networking between members of the Chamber of Commerce and the HBAA.

The committee has also added an educational component. Two rooms are set aside for participants to host seminars in a quiet area away from the show floor so consumers can ask questions and obtain additional information about products, financing or to set up appointments with vendors.

The Home Show will be open to the public from 11:00 am – 9:00 pm on Saturday, October 31 and from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 1.  Admission is $5 per person and tickets are available at the door.

Response to the Home Show has been very positive, with almost a quarter of the available booth space already reserved by area contractors.  The deadline to reserve space is Wednesday, September 30, 2009.  A 50% deposit is required with registration.  Payment in full is required by the deadline.

COSTARS is PA’s version of GSA schedules and provides opportunities for hundreds of businesses of all sizes in all locations, to compete for millions of dollars of Pennsylvania and local government business.

Workshop Leader (1PM to 4PM): Mr. Tim Fulkerson, Director, Marketing & Constituent Relations for PA DGS. Mr. Fulkerson will discuss the COSTARS Program and the process involved in becoming an approved COSTARS vendor.

Sunday we went back up late in the evening to enjoy the festivities a bit more and check out the fireworks show which is always a crowd-pleaser. As soon as we walked in, we saw my brother, and our friends Jay, Wyatt, Steve, and Ron standing by the beer pavilion so we stopped and talked for a second.  We walked around, transitioning between pushing our kid in the stroller and holding her while weaving through a crowd twice the size of the night before.  I couldnt believe how many people were there!  We got some pizza again and sat down, talking with our friend John and his wife Gwen for a bit.  My sister-in-law brought my niece Sadie over and she was talking with our baby for a few minutes.  Next we got back up and walked around a bit more, then before we knew it, the Fireworks show had started.  It seemed a bit loud for the baby, so we started to walk down towards our car (about 7 blocks away).  We stopped on Brush Ave and watched the Fireworks show and the baby loved it!  There were people in their yards on lawn chairs andthey had small fires going and they were watching the fireworks as well.  Finally, as it does every year, the Grand Finale came at the end of the fireworks show and we walked down to our cars at my parents house and headed home.

The weekend was great and I’m glad my daughter got to check out her first St. Therese’s festival because as far back as I can remember growing up in the West End, I went pretty much every year.

David M. Bailey is a 12+ year survivor of a Brain Tumor who doubles as a gifted musician.  He will be coming to First Presbyterian Church in Downtown Johnstown to reflect on his experiences and play some of his music.  He has been through multiple treatments since being diagnosed in 1996 and still managed to release 19 Albums of his music.

Saturday night I got the chance to take my girlfriend and our daughter to the Fireworks Show at the galleria.  We got there at roughly 9:05, but the show didnt start till about 9:40.  We started out at Lowe’s Parking Lot, thinking the fireworks would scare my daughter , but it turns out she didnt even notice them till we moved to McDonald’s Parking lot.  She loved them! Anyways the night worked out great and we got some really good photos of the show…

UPDATE:  Click Here for the WJAC-TV Story - One of our friends Jen Tiffany had her mother, Peggy Tiffany pass away due to cancer in 2008. We found the benefit online and thought that it is only right for us to feature this story. Our thoughts go out to their family. Peggy Tiffany lost her battle to Cancer on July 26th, 2008.  In her memory, her son, Jamie Tiffany, started The Peggy Tiffany Memorial Fund to help local cancer patients through the Conemaugh Health Foundation.  Jamie also held a bowling tournament in the in January to raise money for the fund.

The Peggy Tiffany Memorial Benefit Oldies Dance will be held on Saturday, July 25 at the Ace’s Lounge starting at 6:30 pm.  Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

As mentioned in other posts, we at MyJohnstownPA.com are avid motorcyclists.  Our intern Jamie was out getting information for the site and came back to us with the following article about a benefit ride for a fallen rider by the name of Ed Berringer.  We felt it was necessary to note this incident and put up the info about The Benefit Ride his family is holding for him.

Here’s the Article:

Wonderful Husband, truck driver for CVS Pharmacy, licensed minister, faithful churchman, craftsman, and member of Christian Motorcyclists Association.

On September 20, 2008 after visiting a motorcycle rally in Altoona and helping out at the Christian Motorcyclists Association booth, Ed called his wife, Sue, and started home.  Before leaving Altoona, while stopped and waiting for a traffic signal to change, he was hit from the rear by a pickup truck travelling about 45mph.  The truck driver was poorly insured.  After two major surgeries and an extensive stay in the hospital/rehabilitation center, Ed is left paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a spinal cord injury and is continuing his physical rehabilitation at home.  Financially, the couple has been devastated by medical costs and reduced income.

The Ride is an oppurtunity to assist and encourage Ed and Sue Berringer with your monetary donation.
