As the weather begins to warm up this week, so will a popular local ice rink. Planet Ice, located on Jari drive in Richland Township – Johnstown – PA, has seen its share of ups and downs over the last few years, but as of today, (although not confirmed) it’s doors seem to be closed indefinitely.
It is rumored that a bank has taken over the property and may choose to re-open within a few days but no further indications have been made as to the fate of the local attraction. For 10+ years, many local patrons have attended public skating, figure skating lessons, hockey games and held birthday parties there. If it were to close It would be a major loss to our community.
Planet Ice housed groups such as:
- Adult League Hockey
- The Johnstown Figure Skating Club
- Special Olympics
- Johnstown Sitting Bulls Sled Hockey Team
- Local College and High School Teams
We have found a Facebook group that is asking for any type of help from local politicians as well as any area business leaders to keep the facility open.
A quick visit to their website (http://planeticeusa.com) now yields a blank page and a call in to the facility was not answered nor returned.
