New York, NY, United States (CNS) – Howard Stern, radio and media personality
Birthdate: January 12, 1954
Birthplace: Jackson Heights, New York
Sign: Capricorn
Born Howard Allan Stern, he was born to a Austro-Hungarian immigrant parents on January 12, 1954. He has an older sister, Ellen. He grew up in Roosevelt and attended the Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School, but moved to South Side High School in Rockville Center in 1969.
He started becoming interested in radio when he was just five. His father was a co-owner of Aura Recording, Inc., a Manhattan studio where voice-overs for commercials and cartoons were made. He turned down an acceptance at Elmira College in favor of Boston University because of the latter’s reputation in broad communications. During his sophomore year, he volunteered at the campus radio station WTBU-FM, where he spun records and read news. He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Communications in 1976.
After graduating, he worked at the New York progressive rock station, WRNW-FM, in 1976. By November 1977, he became the station’s program director.
In 1978, he married college sweetheart Alison Berns. They have three daughters together: Emily Beth (1983), Debra Jennifer (1986), and Ashley Jade (1993).
Stern worked in various radio stations before Wren Records Limited approached him to produce an album of his comedy bits, titled “50 Ways to Rank Your Mother,” his first venture outside radio.
He was also contacted by NBC Radio Network, who offered him an afternoon drive shift for WNBC-AM in New York. His contract included a salary of $1 million over 5 years.
In 1982, late night show host David Letterman invited him to guest on “Late Night with David Letterman.” That appearance launched Stern into the national spotlight for the first time, which meant success for his radio show.
Amid his deteriorating relationship with the management, he left WNBC in 1985. He was kept busy by a series of live shows at clubs with Robin Quivers. In November of the same year, he returned to radio through the rock station WXRK-FM.
By 1990, he has started a weekly hour-long comedy on WWOR-TV titled “The Howard Stern Show.” It ended in 1992, but he then started to host a one-on-one celebrity interview show on the E! Entertainment network.
In 1994, he embarked on a political campaign. He ran for Governor of New York under the Libertarian Party. He withdrew his candidacy and subsequently endorsed George Pataki, who won the gubernatorial election.
As a shock jock, he has several times infuriated different groups, including the Hispanic community when just after a few days of singer Selena’s death in 1995, he criticized her music, targeting Hispanic music in particular.
He has written two books, “Private Parts,” which was adapated into a film, and “Miss America.”
In 1999, Stern separated from Berns. They divorced amicably in 2001. He married model Beth Ostrosky in 2008 after eight years of dating.
He currently hosts “The Howard Stern Show” on Sirius XM.
